Almost every historic building in Rzeszów, even the smallest one, has its meticulously documented history and genealogy. It is the genealogy of its successive owners. The tenement located at number 6 Przesmyk Street, dating from the second half of the 19th century, which now houses the Schanel Residence hotel, was built by the Watchela merchant family. In subsequent years, the ownership of the building had changed several times until when in 1999 the current owners bought it. In order to bring their story, we need to go back to the days of the late 19th century, when Laurent Chanel, a handsome French bachelor married a beautiful Leopoldyna Konstantyna, who was the daughter of Fryderyk Holberg, a general from Vienna. They settled down in Eastern Galicia in the Austrian Empire, in a village called Kamionka Strumiłowa, and when Germanisation began they changed their surname to Schanel. The family had lived there until the end of World War II, when the great-grandmother of the current owner, Maria Grudysz-Schanel, moved to Rzeszow. The current owners renovated the tenement which regained its old charm, and created the Schanel Residence hotel which has distinct character and atmosphere of the times of Laurent (Wawrzyniec) Chanel’s youth. The decor of the rooms reminds us of the late 19th century France, the Parisian way of life and the Parisian fashion of the time, as there are traces of kinship of the famous Parisian designer Gabriela (COCO) Chanel’ father with Laurent.
